With Nokia Build, French Users Can Customize the Nokia 7310 Online

Nokia France has built a website called Nokia Build that allows its customers to design or customize their handset before ordering online. At the moment, it is only available for the Nokia 7310 and basically lets you design a sticker for the back of the phone. It could be really cool, depending on the final quality. How important is customization for you and how much more, if at all, would you like to pay to personalize your phone?

NVIDIA enters the top supercomputers list at #29

NVIDIA enters the top supercomputers list at #29

The Tokyo institute of Technology has built a supercomputer called TSUBAME that uses NVIDIA's Tesla GPU. It is fast enough to enter the coveted list of top 500 most powerful computers in the world (as measured by the Linpack benchmark). The reason for switching to GPU computing is clear:

“In testing our key applications, the Tesla GPUs delivered speed-ups that we had never seen before, sometimes even orders of magnitude – a tremendous competitive boost for our scientists and engineers in reducing their time to solution.” (Satoshi Matsuoka, Tokyo Tech)

It's unclear what is the ratio between space, power consumption and performance, but something tells me that we will see more of these.

Music Flow Concept

Music Flow Concept

Mention music flow, and what image flashes across your mind? Well, perhaps it is time for you to experience a paradigm shift with the words “Music Flow”. This concept features a faucet that plays back your favorite pre-loaded MP3s, complete with matching earbuds and controls. The product looks like a pretty ordinary home faucet, but it brings a new dimension to how we interpret everyday fixtures around the house, as this new fun interface function injects some much needed soul into a digital device. The Tap has internal memory to store all your favorite MP3s, functioning also as a speaker whenever the earphones are placed in the cradle. Turning on water would be the equivalent of turning on the sound. Since it is a concept, why couldn't the designers make it waterproof?

Samsung 2494HS LCD Monitor

Samsung 2494HS LCD Monitor

Samsung's latest LCD monitor, the 2494HS does not come with a round number where screen size is concerned, instead, it features 23.6" of viewing real estate. Other specifications are no less impressive though :-

  • Native 1,920 x 1,080 resolution
  • 50,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio
  • Stereo speakers
  • HDMI input
  • DVI and VGA connectivity
  • 5ms pixel response time
  • 300cd/m2 brightness

The Samsung 2494HS LCD monitor ought to be out in Japan sometime in the middle of next month onwards for $420 thereabouts. Good to know Samsung has a heart for the earth, as this LCD monitor sips just 48W of power when in use. No idea on whether the 2494HS will see action outside of Japan though.

Wii64 Mod

Wii64 Mod

It doesn't really make much sense to rip apart the innards of a current generation console and replace those with one from a couple of generations ago. Still, truth is often stranger than fiction, and this modder has decided to use the chassis of the Nintendo Wii to carry the innards of a Nintendo 64. This hybrid creation is dubbed the "Wii64", and retains the Wii's blue lights that light up whenever it is turned on. The Wii64 is currently being put on eBay, where bidding began with $49.99. Not something we would want to get though, but it is still an interesting hack to begin with.

Larger Eee Top Models Coming Our Way

Larger Eee Top Models Coming Our Way

Wasn't it just 24 hours ago that Asus released its 15.6" Eee Top all-in-one desktop computer? Well, they certainly aren't one to rest on their laurels, having already released news that they will be outsourcing future 20" and 22" models to Quanta Computer for manufacturing. These larger sized Eee Top computers will be out in the first half of next year. How much do you think Asus will price these new models, considering the current Eee Top retails for approximately $565 at this point in time? Whatever the figure, surely they won't be as expensive as Apple's offerings, right?

Creative Zen Moo

Creative Zen Moo

Has Creative finally failed to live up to its namesake, with the latest MP3 player from the Singaporean company being named "Moo"? Well, perhaps they're trying to tap into a much younger and less mature demographic. After all, the Creative Zen Moo comes in the form factor of a cow's face, and looks to feature a similar set of functions found in the Zen Stone, including a tiny OLED display, 2B of internal memory, 20 hour playback time and an integrated FM tuner. The Creative Zen Moo was specially designed in this manner to pay a tribute to the year of the cow in the Chinese zodiac calendar for 2009.

Atomic Floyd Titanium2 Headphones

Atomic Floyd has released its own pair of in-ear headphones known as Titanium2, merging both form and functionality into a single device. Some of the innovative features found in the Titanium2 include AcousticSteel and SoundProof. Couple that with the angel wing ear loops look, and you'll get a better idea of the Titanium2. Designed by Stefan Andrén, the Titanium2 is more than welcome for use with the most popular portable media players in the market today in addition to other MP3 devices. Atomic Flyod will launch the Titanium2 this December in the UK.

Nokia Patents Gesture Controls

Nokia Patents Gesture Controls

Nokia has yet to make touch-based interface a mainstream method of navigation on its handsets, but that could soon change with news of the Finnish cell phone manufacturer leaking out that it is working on gesture control for cell phones in a recent patent that was filed in January this year. This patent will involve an ultrasonic-based system that is able to tell where your fingers are pointing at the display, and can even detect basic gestures such as opening and closing one's hand to manipulate a Web browser. Sounds rather far fetched? We think that most people will settle for touchscreen displays instead since that is much more certain compared to gesture controls. What do you think?

Acoustic Research Decorative Speaker Covers

Acoustic Research Decorative Speaker Covers

Speaker design is extremely subjective, and not all of them come in an aesthetically pleasing manner. Good thing Acoustic Research wants to change this trend with its new decorative speaker covers. This home improvement idea allows you to hide your speaker in a wicker box, while satellite speakers can be places in Sconces instead. In addition, you can also pick up a clock to help hide the relevant speakers, or stash them into a set of fake books without suffering too much degradation in sound quality. Those who deal with larger speakers can always store them in $129.95 leather chests for a cleaner look.

MPGIO MF101 Portable Media Player

MPGIO MF101 Portable Media Player

Trust the Koreans to roll out this portable media player that not only handles a wide variety of audio and video formats, it also boasts the ability to keep you entertained via pre-loaded Flash games including 'Mini Game Heaven', 'Super Action Hero', 'Penoa jeongi', 'Punupunupong' and 'Come2us Soccer 2006'. The MF101 PMP will have 1GB of internal memory which frankly, isn't decent enough to qualify it within PMP ranks, although it does come with a ARM 922T 192Mhz processor and a 2.4" QVGA TFT LCD (320 x 240 resolution) display with 260 thousand colors, allowing you to milk your compressed video for all its worth. Prices start from less than $100 onwards. Would be nice to see a memory card slot of some sort though.

Chuwi M70 Portable Media Player

Chuwi M70 Portable Media Player

Chuwi has just introduced a new portable media player (PMP) for the masses in the form of the M70, and this little PMP that could comes with touchscreen support (with a little bit of help from LG, of course), a display at 800 x 480 resolution with 16 million colors, gaming support (nothing 32-bit obviously) as well as a wide compatibility with both audio and video formats. Unfortunately, it lacks GPS navigation, which sorta pushes it down the list where desirability is concerned. Won't be knocking the iPod off its perch anytime soon though.
