Apple Patent for Always-On Displays. Would It Use E-Ink?

Apple has filed a patent that would allow it to have an always on display. By that we mean that when the normal LCD display shuts off, a second, low-power, layer would take over to display basic information (time, email received, battery life...). Honestly, the illustrations are so vague that they don't really help explain the interesting bits - and remember, it's just "an idea" so Apple might just be searching for a way to execute. It might be possible to use an E-ink layer in the display. E-Ink uses power only when changes in the image are required and works great in direct light. Hum...
Grand Turismo rendered in 3840x2160 (4K) resolution

To celebrate the 10 years of Gran Turismo, the team that developed the game (Polyphony) added some tiled rendering code to get four PS3s to render the game in 3840x2160. It's a classic way to scale resolution up, and as you can imagine, the sharpness was amazing. Of course, you need the right projector for the job: in this instance, the SRX-110, which costs north of $80,000 the last time I checked (and I don't check every week).

Microsoft sued for Windows Boot Time. Need More info Because It Just Sounds Stupid Right Now

A number of employers have started a class action against Microsoft, arguing that their employees spend between 30mn to 60mn a day in the Windows boot sequence. The attacking party includes AT&T or Cigna.
To reach 30mn to 60mn of boot times a day, the worker must either have a computer that really suck (they claim that Vista takes 15mn to boot), or they have to reboot 15-40 times a day. In either case, someone in this company has to be fired. It could be whoever decided to install Vista on crap machines (come on, Vista boots in less than 3mn on a $400 Nettop) or for using apps that crash 40 times a day.
I'm not particularly fan of Microsoft, but I'd like to see more information on these boot times. PC specifications, number or reboots a day. Right now, it just sounds like one more stupid lawsuit. I used to work for a hardware company using beta hardware and beta drivers, sometimes on a beta OS, writing beta software, but I don't think that I ever spent 60mn a day in boot sequence.
Dell Inspiron Minis Get New Colors And Designs

What's the world like without color and design? Good thing the same can be said for notebook design, as Dell's Inspiron Minis now come in a range of new colors and graphic designs, available on the Inspiron Mini 9 and Mini 12 platforms only in the U.S. and Canada. Some of the new colors include Cherry Red and Pretty Pink, while you can also pick from a trio of images from urban artist and “designer toy” creator Tristan Eaton. Prices remain the same, and don't expect the system specifications to differ, either.
Re-cycle Laundry Center Concept

The Re-cycle Laundry Center concept certainly looks out of this world, taking on both form and function of the recycling logo. All three units might look as though they do the same thing, but in reality (as real as a concept gets anyways), one of those is a washer, while the other is a dryer and the third is a water tank and filtration system. Whenever the unit spins clockwise, water will be gravity-fed from the tank to the washing machine and vice versa, doing away with the need for a pump. Once the washing cycle is complete, dirty water will return to the storage tank where it will be filtered for future use. During that time, the user is able to use the dryer as an independent device.

Spb Wireless Monitor 3.0 Offers Data Monitoring

We think that getting an unlimited data plan is cool, mainly because you know that for a certain amount of money each month, you'll be able to enjoy unlimited surfing with your device no matter where you are. Gone are the days when you were counting pages by the kilobyte, which makes carrying around a data-centric gadget redundant. For those who want to know where every single byte goes on their device, there is the Spb Wireless Monitor 3.0 software that offers Windows Mobile users full control over all types of data connections. It does so by monitoring these data connections according to configurable tariffs and data plans, so that you have a rough guesstimate on just how much you have to pay monthly.
Fiio E5 Headphone Amplifier

At first glance, people might mistake the Fiio E5 for some sort of cheap iPod Shuffle clone. Upon closer inspection, however, they will realize that this is not even a digital audio player, but in reality is a clip-on headphone amplifier that functions as a volume booster for your favorite portable media player. It comes with an Apple-style clip, measuring a diminutive 44mm x 38mm x 12.2mm. Despite its small size, it still packs in a pretty impressive performance, capable of 150mW (at 16O; or 12MW to 300O) power output with under 0.009-percent distortion at 10mW. This makes it 30% more powerful than its predecessor, and can last for up to 20 hours of continuous audio playback before requiring a recharge. The Fiio E5 is tipped to retail for less than $20.
Asus Eee Top Unveiled

As promised yesterday, the Asus Eee Top has debuted at Taipei, Taiwan, and this 15.6" all-in-one computer comes with touchscreen capability as expected for easier navigation. Initial impressions point toward an average build quality, while the "Easy Mode" user interface which runs on top of Windows XP is able to load an Asus-built application or return you to the Windows XP interface at your whim and fancy. There is no word on when this will hit countries outside of Taiwan, but at this point in time, it will retail for approximately $580 if you plan on importing one.
Nyko Charge Station Quad

Nyko loves a foursome with its new Charge Station Quad that shows off its belief in multiplayer mayhem with your Wii, featuring a quartet of NiMH rechargeable battery packs, four rubber Wii Remote battery covers and a four-port Wiimote battery charger that comes studded with LEDs as though it was some sort of digital bling. This $50 gaming peripheral will ship from next month onwards, but it is a shame that Nyko isn't ready to accept any pre-orders at this point in time.
Yahoo OneSearch On T-Mobile Phones

Yahoo might not have a CEO at this point in time, but that doesn't mean the company is running around like a headless chicken. The latest news involves Yahoo's mobile search feature/service being made available on a range of T-Mobile cell phones in the near future. Do you think we could possibly see Yahoo's OneSearch make an appearance on the Android-powered G1? We doubt so, as there would clearly be a conflict of interest here, but it is an interesting thought nonetheless. Word has it that Yahoo wants the OneSearch button to be pre-loaded on new models so that users won't have a hard time accessing it the moment they get their hands on the phone.
iPhone 3G And Storm Browser Speed Test

Since the BlackBerry Storm is supposedly one of the candidates lined up to knock the iPhone 3G out of the ring, it only makes perfect sense to compare the two. This time round we'll take a look at the speed between browsers on both devices, and rest assured, the results are not rigged but are an actual reflection of real world usage. Below are some of the results :-
- NYTimes.com - iPhone 3G wins, Storm does not bad... but definitely chokes on the Javascript a bit
- WSJ.com - BlackBerry Storm wins, iPhone 3G loads slower then crashes
- CrackBerry.com - BlackBerry Storm wins, iPhone 3G loads slower then crashes
- ArsTechnica - BlackBerry Storm wins
- Conclusions: It's hard to conclude much in 20 minutes
