This is the X-Connect 400w Power Supply Unit,
made by Ultra Products . This PSU is innovating the
computer power supply market by introducing Modular
Power Cables. Lets see how it works...

Thanks again to ThinkGeek for providing us with another
unique product to review!

In The Box:

The Ultra X-Connect power supply comes in a larger box than most others do. That is because of the many extra cables included and the excellent packaging.

You can see the nice styrofoam blocks they have surrounding the power supply for shipping protection. Also I particularly liked the diagram on the box that holds the modular cables, it shows the beginner all the cables included and what type each one is.

Design:

The Ultra XConnect is not just designed for innovating a practical purpose but we also see some very nice aesthetic value here ( Sweet Looks ). You will LOVE the reflective finish!

In most design aspects it is just like a typical power supply, the exceptions are the reflective finish, and the modular cables which we will talk about in the features.

Their stylish fan grills make the XConnect really stand out,
I find that Simple Yet Stylish is usually the best way to go.

It has dual 80mm Fans, one on top and one on back, makes for some pretty good airflow.

Features:

First lets talk about Power. I tested the XConnect PSU on a computer being used in a work environment that uses plenty of power, here are the specifications of the test computer:

 CPU:     P4 3.0GHz
MOBO:  Gigabyte GA-8I915P Duo Pro  (PCI Express 16x)
 RAM:     1GB of GeIL Ultra Value Memory CL2 5-4-4 DDR400 PC3200
VIDEO:  Chaintech GeForce 6600GT 128MB (PCI Express 16x)
HDD:     120GB Western Digital EIDE 8MB Cache
              250GB Maxtor EIDE 8MB Cache

This computer also has Fans, Lights, CD Burners, Floppies, etc etc.
When I plugged in a 400w GENERIC PSU it ran for about twenty minutes and then proceeded to burn out the generic PSU. The generic psu had tested fine in other computers and ran for hours. My point is the computer uses quite a bit of power.

Now my purpose with this site is not to give way too detailed of a comparative analysis, but more to tell you whether things WORK, see whether they are made crappy or what, so I will not be delving into technical details of the power supply.

I plugged this baby in and it worked fine in the computer above. No problems what so ever. No difference in ambient temp inside the case either.

The XConnect PSU input and output specs.

I did do some extra research and found out that this Power Supply is not quite comparable to lets say a Antec TruePower 430w or 480w PSUs. The price range is about the same, but for the XConnect you are paying mainly for the MODULAR CABLES. Just wanted to emphasize that, its more like a $50 - $70 PSU with fancy looks and modular cables.

Modular Cables:

The UV Reactive Modular Cables

Did I mention the X-Connect Cables are UV reactive? Yes they are! I will show that to you in a minute. The cables you see above are all of the cables that come with your XConnect PSU. More than enough really unless you have a load of components.

Basically the cables you get are:

 1 - 4-pin Intel Pentium 4 Motherboard Power Cable
 1 - 20-pin ATX Motherboard Power Cable
 1 - 6-pin Xeon Power Cable
2 - 4-pin Power Cables, one 17" long and one 21", with three 4-pin heads plus a floppy connector
 2 - Y-Cable with 2, 4-pin Power connectors
 1 - 6" Y-Cable with 2 SATA and 4-pin power adapter

Here you see the standard 20-pin atx power connector.

I was interested in the quality of the Modular Cables, after a close inspection they are much better than your typical cables and made very well.

The modular cables are shielded to reduce EMI, covered with a nice transparent UV-reactive sheath, and have Plastic heads on the ends that have little ridges to make plugging and unplugging the power connectors easier! After using this PSU for a while I can say that the ease of the plugs makes a BIG difference, especially if you are always taking out components and putting in new ones.

Here you can see where the Modular Cables plug in to the XConnect.

The little rubbery place holders pop out very easy, I just keep them in the Box that was included for the modular cables so I don't lose them.

Lighted Up:

Last but not least, I tested the UV Reactive feature of the cables.

Here you can see the X-Connect 400w Power Supply Plugged in
and ready to go,  then under a brigh UV Lamp. Sweet!

The UV reactivity of the cables works and looks great. The XConnect would be a great looking and practical addition to any Modded computer.

Conclusion:

The X-Connect 400w PSU is a medium to higher quality Power Supply with Fancy looks and innovative Modular Cables. The Modular Cables are the main beauty of this beast, they work just like they are supposed to and REALLY do make it easier to work with. The UV reactivity of the cables and the fact that they are shielded & round makes them gorgeous to look at and high quality.

I would definitely recommend the Ultra X-Connect for anyone with a modded computer or that just hates the frustration and ugliness of a typical power supply.

PROS

  • Sweet sweet looks, any geek will love it.
    UV Reactive Cables look GREAT.

  • Modular cables are really helpful, help with airflow, looks, keeps your computer from being messy, shielded from EMI etc.

  • Dual 80mm Fans

CONS

  • The quality of the actual power supply itself is not much different from a $50 - $70 PSU.
